COPENHAGEN, Aug 7 (Reuters) – A Polish man was sentenced to four months in prison on Wednesday for punching Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in June as she walked through Copenhagen, raising concerns about the safety of government officials in the Scandinavian country.
The 39-year-old was found guilty of assaulting a public servant and sentenced to a prison term, after which he will be deported from Denmark and banned from returning for six years, the court ruled. He struck Frederiksen after a chance encounter and while she was walking across a public square.
“The suspect hit the prime minister on the right shoulder with a clenched fist, causing the prime minister to lose his balance,” the court ruling said.
