Emmy winner Quinta Brunson shares latest hit from “Abbott Elementary”
General editor of the variety
One of the liveliest consumer activations at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con was for ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” The experience, dubbed “AVA Fest” (A Very Abbott Festival), drew thousands of attendees — all hoping to hop on a carnival swing, slide down a high slide into a pool of plastic balls, punch a strength tester and receive a free “Abbott”-themed trucker hat.
It was quite an event for a show that isn’t exactly your typical Comic-Con fare. There have been no dragons, superheroes or zombies in the three seasons I’ve enjoyed of “Abbott Elementary” so far. But the ABC comedy has a huge following, and there’s no better place to find fans than among the 150,000 or so people who showed up in San Diego. As proof of that, the line to get into “AVA Fest” snaked along the pier behind the convention center all weekend. Let “Abbott Elementary” be a proud outsider.
