BBC commentator misgenderes Raven Saunders, US shot putter enters competition wearing mask and sunglasses
Jazmin Sawyers, the British long jumper who is commentating for the BBC during the Olympics after an injury prevented her from competing, was quick to correct the mistake made by her colleague Steve Backley after Backley accidentally addressed a shot putter with the wrong pronoun.
Sawyers and Backley, a former Team GB javelin thrower, were commenting on the assembled shot put at the Stade de France on Thursday morning local time when Backley made the misstep. Referring to American shot putter Raven Saunders, he said: "The colourful character of Raven Saunders [is] back. Nice to see her back, a little bit. A little bit to see her, I mean," he added, referring to the full face mask Saunders is wearing with sunglasses.
Sawyers quickly jumped in: "Well, we can't really see them. Raven Saunders is actually non-binary and with the mask on his head, we're used to seeing them in interesting clothing. Should that be allowed? Why not."
