'Read With Jenna' Pick for May is 'Remarkably Bright Creatures'
If the deal is finalized, Field will play a widow who forms an unlikely friendship with an octopus. The veteran actress' most recent project was last year's comedy 80 for Brady , in which she starred opposite Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Rita Moreno. Field is best known for her award-winning performances in films such as Norma Rae , Places in the Heart , Steel Magnolias , Forrest Gump and more.
Remarkably Bright Creatures is directed by Newman, who also co-wrote the screenplay with John Whittington. The film is produced by David Levine, Bryan Unkeless and Peter Craig. Tony Lipp and Alyssa Rodrigues serve as executive producers.
The official synopsis of the novel reads: "After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, as she's done ever since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously disappeared on a boat in Puget Sound more than thirty years ago. Tova meets the surly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus who lives in the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine, but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—that is, until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his ancient invertebrate body can think of to get the truth for her before it's too late."
