Ryan Murphy Says Menendez Brothers 'Should Send Me Flowers' After 'Monsters' Publicity | E!
Ryan Murphy has stated that the Menendez brothers should be grateful for the Netflix series Monsters, rather than causing controversy.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter , the showrunner doubled down on his thoughts on Erik and Lyle Menendez's recent comments. "The Menendez brothers should send me flowers. They haven't had this much attention in 30 years," Murphy said. "And it's attracted the attention not just of this country, but of the world. There's been an outpouring of interest in their lives and in the cause. I'm sure a lot of people have offered to help them because of the interest in my show and what we've done."
Despite Murphy's strong statements, he also revealed that he never expected an appreciative commentary from the Menendez brothers or their family in the first place. Instead, he insisted that the focus of Monsters was primarily to highlight the issue of sexual abuse from the start. "I was specifically interested in the topic of male sexual abuse, and I wanted to talk about it," Murphy said. "It's something in our culture that we rarely talk about."
