Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool finally enter the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine. As popular as the character is today, it took years to bring Wade Wilson to the screen. Reynolds was in development on a Deadpool movie as far back as 2004. After nearly a decade in development, Deadpool finally began filming in 2015.
Ryan Reynolds SACRIFICED Salary for 'Deadpool': Focused on Creativity Over Budget
The challenges of bringing Deadpool to the big screen continued during filming, however. Production couldn’t afford to keep Deadpool co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick on set, so Reynolds came up with a solution.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Reynolds explained how he sacrificed his salary on Deadpool to ensure his co-writers remained on set.
"When I finally got to make it, it had been almost 10 years. There was no part of me that thought this was going to be a success when Deadpool finally got the green light," Reynolds said. "I even abandoned the idea of getting paid to make the movie just to get it back on the screen: They didn't want my co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick on set, so I took what little salary I had left and paid them to be on set with me so we could have a de facto writers' room."
