Voice actors may be one step closer to storming the picket lines after the SAG-AFTRA national board awarded the power to call a strike to national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

On Saturday, the board voted unanimously to allow Crabtree-Ireland to declare a strike for services under the Interactive Media Agreement, 10 months after the union first voted on the strike authorization. Normally, the National Board retains the power to ultimately declare a work stoppage, making a transfer of power notable.
Any strike would “take effect at a time and date to be determined by Crabtree-Ireland” with prior approval from the National Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee.
It’s been nearly two years since the Interactive Media Agreement was extended past its original expiration date to allow for more talks between the union and video game companies. Negotiations have been on and off during that time. The union said Saturday that while negotiations are currently ongoing, the sides are “far apart” on provisions regarding artificial intelligence.
