American Murder: Laci Peterson | Official Trailer | Netflix
The case of Scott Peterson, who murdered his wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn son, has become the subject of successful documentaries and films. On Christmas Eve 2002, Scott’s pregnant wife disappeared. Months later, her body washed up in the San Francisco Bay, a mile from where the fetus was found. At the time, all the evidence was incriminating against Scott, who was on trial for the double murder.
A jury reportedly convicted Scott Peterson of two counts of murder in 2004, CNN reported. He was sentenced to death the following year. Later, in 2020, the California Supreme Court overturned Scott’s death sentence and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Now, the Los Angeles Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization that works to exonerate wrongfully convicted criminals, has taken up the case. The organization is representing him in light of new evidence that could prove his innocence.
The Scott Peterson case marked a turning point in popular culture, as successful documentaries and films covered it extensively. Popular documentaries include The Murder of Laci Peterson and Scott Peterson: An American Murder Mystery. Other films include The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story and Amber Frey: Witness for the Prosecution.
