There have been numerous attempts to document the rock star's life on film over the years, but none have come to fruition. Woodley is starring in and producing the film, which will be shot in 30 days and cost about $10 million in "qualified expenses."
“California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the sidewalks of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not only the world of music, but also the world of her vibrant humanity,” Woodley said in a press release Tuesday.
The commission also announced that it has awarded $12 million to film “Suits LA” in L.A. The pilot episode of NBC’s spinoff series “Suits” was filmed in Vancouver, home to one of the most generous film tax breaks in the world.
