“The Zen garden is the type of garden that gives people more freedom in their viewpoint, because it’s meant to be viewed from a certain distance, and no matter what angle you’re looking at objects in the garden from, it gives you a relativity between those rocks or the landscape and how you see things,” says Elastic creative director and lead title designer Nadia Tzuo. “It’s like we’re following the protagonist, John Blackthorne, because he’s a foreigner experiencing this completely alien landscape of Japan and he’s just sitting there as an observer the whole time. So we thought it would be perfect to follow his ship through the garden in the sequence.” Below, Tzuo offers insight into how the main title sequence came to be.
