After four seasons on Saturday Night Live, Punkie Johnson has revealed the reason for her sudden departure, just ahead of the show's 50th season.
Punkie Johnson Reveals What It's Like to Work on SNL
The comedian recently explained to fellow SNL alums Dana Carvey and David Spade that she “didn’t really feel like I fit” into the NBC sketch comedy show since her first season as the lead in 2020, and that she now plans to focus on stand-up comedy.
"I talked to my team. I was like, 'Look, I don't really know if I belong in this job, so maybe I should just end it,'" Johnson said on the duo's Fly on the Wall podcast episode about her initial conversation with her team, who urged her not to quit without a plan.
She ended up sticking around for another season. "I think I did about three or four sketches in the first half. And I usually only get two or three in the whole season, so I'm like, 'Oh man, I'm doing great,'" Johnson said.
