Spanish PM Sanchez refuses to testify in wife's trial | Race To Power
MADRID, July 30 (Reuters) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez refused to testify on Tuesday in a judicial investigation into alleged corruption and influence-peddling of his wife, prompting him to consider resigning in April, lawyers present at the hearing said.
The proceedings are part of a preliminary investigation into whether Begona Gomez abused her position as the prime minister's wife to recruit sponsors for a master's degree program at the university she taught.
Sanchez has repeatedly denied the accusations against her, saying they were baseless and staged by right-wing political opponents. On Tuesday, the Public Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit on his behalf against the investigating judge for alleged misconduct.
