Ubisoft's "Star Wars Outlaws" is the latest high-profile AAA game based on one of Hollywood's biggest cash cows — and the next attempt to rehabilitate Disney's troubled presence in video games.
Ubisoft plays, Disney wears so often shits! – Star Wars Outlaws in test / review
“Outlaws” is set for release on August 30 and is the first “Star Wars” title from a major console publisher after EA’s 10-year “Star Wars” rights deal expired. Developed by Massive Entertainment, the game is set in an open world, similar to Ubisoft’s flagship franchises “Assassin’s Creed,” “Far Cry” and “The Division.”
Massive last developed the 2023 open-world “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora,” based on Disney’s record-breaking film franchise. Reviews weren’t negative, but the game was already 40% off on Steam 12 days after its December release, suggesting undersales that Ubisoft has yet to disclose.
Critics' reviews for "Outlaws" aren't much better, but the "Star Wars" affiliation means there's a lot more to the game. Even if sales for Massive's "Avatar" game haven't matched the scale of the films of the same name, "Star Wars" is more established in the gaming world, with dozens of titles dating back decades.
