Secret Police Footage by David Norris and Gary Dobson
In April 1993, a group of white men attacked and killed a man named Stephen Lawrence in London. Reports suggest that Lawrence was waiting for a bus when the crime took place in Eltham, south-east London. Although police launched an investigation to find the killers, they closed down the case in August 2020 due to a lack of evidence. However, they reopened the case and found Gary Dobson and David Norris guilty of the murder of Stephen Lawrence. They are currently serving their sentences in a UK prison.
According to the BBC, Stephen Lawrence, who lived with his family in southeast London, dreamed of becoming an architect and was studying for his A-levels. On April 22, 1993, Lawrence was waiting for a bus in Eltham when a group of white men attacked and eventually killed him. The outlet reported that he was accompanied by his friend, who escaped the scene unharmed. It was also reported that the perpetrators were part of a gang. A House of Commons report noted that the killers "stabbed Lawrence to death" in an "unprovoked, racist attack." After police began investigating the murder, they questioned several suspects.
BBC reported that the Metropolitan Police charged several suspects for the murders, but later dropped them. Many people criticized the authorities for mishandling the case and not conducting a proper investigation. For years, the authorities were unable to catch Stephen Lawrence’s killers. However, in 2012, they charged Gary Dobson and David Norris with Lawrence’s murder and sentenced them to prison. They are reportedly serving their sentences in separate prisons in England.
