Debuting in 2018, the first installment, Stree was directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Jio Studios, Maddock Films and D2R Films. The film stars Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Flora Saini and Pankaj Tripathi in the lead roles. Other notable cast includes Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, Vijay Raaz, Aakash Dabhade and Atul Srivastava. Stree grossed around $19.9 million in India, making it the highest-grossing film for both Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor.
The trailer for Stree 2 begins with Rudra (Pankaj Tripathi) narrating a passage from the Chanderi Purana, which foretells the coming of the "Sar Kata Bhoot" after Stree leaves. It is soon revealed that this spirit is responsible for transforming an ordinary woman into Stree (the spirit). The upcoming sequel will see Pankaj Tripathi, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor reprising their roles.
