Susan Smith's ex-husband talks tragedy
Susan Smith, the South Carolina mother who drowned her two sons, has a parole date coming up and her ex-husband David Smith plans to fight her release. David Smith, who has since remarried and moved on with her, reportedly thinks about his sons every day. David "doesn't want Susan to ever get out either."
In 1994, Susan, then 22, drove her car into a lake with her two sons still strapped into the seats. The boys—Michael, 3, and Alexander, 14 months—drowned and died as she stood by the lake watching. Susan later lied to authorities and appeared on national television with her husband, David Smith, pleading for help. Nine days later, she confessed to the crime, claiming an affair was her motive.
Prosecutors later alleged that Susan Smith's affair with then-boyfriend Tom Findlay drove her to kill her sons. A week before the incident, Findlay wrote Susan a letter explaining that he could not be with her because of her children.
