TAIPEI, Aug 2 (Reuters) – Taiwan's presidential office and the former president on Friday expressed support for Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, who is embroiled in a row over her husband's gender at the Paris Olympics, ahead of her opening match.

"Let us cheer together for Lin Yu-ting," Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan's first female president, who ruled the island from 2016 to 2024, wrote on her official Facebook page, adding that Lin was seeking victory for herself and honor for Taiwan.
Lin, 28, is one of two boxers disqualified from last year's world championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after failing a gender eligibility test, but was given the green light to compete in the Paris Olympics.
The other boxer, Algerian Imane Khelif, defeated Italian Angela Carini in a women's welterweight bout on Thursday, landing a series of heavy blows that forced Carini to retire after 46 seconds.
