Earlier this week, Kristi Hovington and her family traveled from their current home of Barcelona to Vienna to celebrate their daughter’s 14th birthday with what promised to be an unforgettable evening at one of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” Vienna shows. But after a planned terrorist attack resulted in the arrest of two local teenagers and the subsequent cancellation of Swift’s three Austrian concerts, it ended in wasted plane tickets, sunk hotel costs, and of course, crushed dreams.

"Of course she was devastated when we heard the news last night," Hovington tells Variety of her daughter, who is an aspiring singer-songwriter. Hovington, a teacher and school librarian, was there with her partner, her daughter and her other two children. "There were a lot of tears at the hotel where we're staying. [Vienna] is almost entirely made up of people from all over the world who came for the concert."
Hovington, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, was among tens of thousands of fans who traveled to the European city to witness the Eras tour, which has just five more dates in London next week before wrapping up its overseas tour. After news broke yesterday that the terrorist attack had been foiled and local promoter Barracuda Music canceled the shows, the streets of Vienna became a vigil of sorts as Swifties gathered to mourn the loss — not just of the shows, but of the time and money spent traveling to get there.
