As the creative community waries about the rise of AI, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos tried to calm the mood. He said that while great stories are the foundation of the entertainment industry, artificial intelligence can also be a great tool for creators.

The impact is hard to predict, he said on a call after the giant streamer’s quarterly results. “I think AI is going to generate a great creative toolkit, a great way for creators to tell better stories.” But where shows and movies win is by connecting with audiences. “It’s in the beauty of the writing, it’s in the chemistry of the actors. It’s in the plot, the twists… I’m not saying audiences don’t notice all this other [AI] stuff. But I think they care more about connecting with the story. And I would say they probably don’t care much about budgets, and maybe not even the technology to deliver it.”
He used animation as an example.
"If you look back over a hundred years of entertainment, you see how great technology and great entertainment go hand in hand," he said. "Animation didn't get cheaper, it got better as we went from hand-drawn to CGI animation. And there are more people working in animation today than ever before.
