American 13-year-olds are still struggling with learning as a result of the pandemic, especially in math, official data released on Wednesday showed.
Student test scores down since pandemic
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a project that has tracked test results since 1969, tested students in late 2022 and found that reading and math scores had declined significantly compared to late 2019.
Average math scores have increased significantly since the tests began, but have now fallen to 1990 levels. The decline is greatest among lower-performing students.
“America’s students are struggling on all fronts. Educators, policymakers and families must work together urgently and decisively to address the learning needs of this generation,” said Beverly Perdue, chair of the National Assessment Governing Board.
