Historical dramas can fall prey to romanticizing the events they depict in the name of storytelling. Remarkably, this 2008 miniseries — winner of 13 Emmys — makes a point of portraying iconic figures of the American Revolution as flesh and blood rather than larger than life. Paul Giamatti is masterful as the title character, but it’s Laura Linney as Abigail Adams who steals the show. Their marriage, which endures through thick and thin, provides John Adams with his emotional core.
