Warner Bros. has finally announced the release date for The Boy and The Heron Max for the upcoming streaming debut of Studio Ghibli's latest Oscar-winning animated film from director Hayao Miyazaki. This comes after Max recently extended his multi-year U.S. deal with the acclaimed Japanese animation studio.
The Boy and the Heron: Voice Cast
"After losing his mother in a hospital fire, young Mahito moves to his family's rural estate," the synopsis reads. "There, a series of mysterious events leads him to a remote and ancient tower, home to a mischievous grey heron. When Mahito's new stepmother disappears, he follows the grey heron into the tower and enters a fantastical world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must discover the secrets of this world and the truth about himself."
The Boy and the Heron is set to make its streaming debut on Friday, September 6, exclusively on Max. It was written and directed by Miyazaki — his first directorial effort in a decade. He's best known for directing such classics as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo.
The English-dubbed version of the hand-drawn animated film features the voices of Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson and Florence Pugh. The film was produced by Studio Ghibli founder Toshio Suzuki.
