Celeste Hughey (“Palm Royale,” “Dead to Me,” “High Fidelity”) will adapt the film for television. Seth MacFarlane is attached as executive producer, as is Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment, with Imagine producing the film. Dana Olsen, who wrote the film, will serve as co-executive producer.
The series will be filmed on the Universal Studios backlot, as will the film. Released in 1989, "The 'Burbs" stars Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun and Corey Feldman. In the film, the residents of a suburban neighborhood suspect their new neighbors of being ritualistic murderers. Produced by Universal Pictures, the film grossed just over $49 million against a reported budget of $18 million. It is now considered a cult classic.
The official logline for the series reads: "Set in contemporary suburbia, The 'Burbs' follows a young couple who return to the husband's childhood home. Their world is turned upside down when new neighbors move in next door, exposing old secrets about the cul-de-sac, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood."
