Rupert Sanders' "The Crow" is a new take on the dark 1989 comic, but there's one element from the franchise's history that the director absolutely refused to copy.

How Brandon Lee Actually Died on the Set of The Crow

During production of the 1994 film adaptation of "The Crow," star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot and killed on set due to a mishap in the film's props department. That tragedy was repeated decades later on the set of "Rust" in October 2021, when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot by live bullets lodged in a prop gun held by Alec Baldwin.

Given that Sanders was filming his film in 2022, both incidents underscored the director's desire to keep the set as safe as possible.

“Safety is a top priority,” he said. “Film sets are very dangerous. There are cars moving fast with cranes attached to the top. There are stuntmen falling off stairs on high wires. Even if you’re walking around on a set at night with rain machines and lights — you’re working in an industrial environment. So it’s dangerous. You have to be safe. The first day I met with the special effects department and the gunsmith, who was great, in Prague. They were very safety-conscious. They follow the same guidelines as the military when it comes to weapons, but I didn’t even want to take that chance.”
