Winstead is expected to play Claire Bartel, one of the film's lead characters who was previously played by Annabella Sciorra in the 1992 film. This will mark Winstead's first horror film in a long time, following appearances in 2016's 10 Cloverfield Lane, 2006's Final Destination 3 and 2006's Black Christmas. She was most recently seen opposite husband Ewan McGregor in the Showtime miniseries A Gentleman in Moscow.
In addition to Winstead, the remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle will be led by rising scream queen Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs). She’s been tipped to play a nanny whose real intentions are to steal and get revenge on the matriarch of the family that hired her. The upcoming film will be directed by Michelle Garza Cervera from a screenplay by Micah Bloomberg. It will be produced by Ted Field, Michael Schaefer and Mike Larocca, with Michael Napoliello and Maria Frisk overseeing the project for Radar Pictures.
The original 1992 film was directed by Curtis Hanson and also starred Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy, Ernie Hudson, Julianne Moore, Madeline Zima and more. The film revolved around a deranged widow who becomes a nanny for one of her late husband's clients in hopes of stealing her mother's family as revenge for reporting her husband's sexual assault.
