“The Piano Lesson” seems to have struck the right Oscar chord.
Piano Lessons with August Wilson | Nominated for the 2023 Tony Award
With Black excellence, impeccable filmmaking and towering performances, Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson” took the awards season stage this weekend at the Telluride Film Festival. First-time director Malcolm Washington and stars John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler were on hand for the film’s premiere to rave reviews. Given the response and Netflix’s enthusiasm for the project, “The Piano Lesson” could find itself with a Best Picture nomination.
The latest adaptation of the late playwright August Wilson's "Century Cycle," the film is set in 1936 Pittsburgh. It follows the Charles family as they grapple with family traumas and the (literal) ghosts of their ancestors — it's a history of violence and cruelty and oppression that's illustrated in the elaborate decorations and designs carved into a piano. And the fate of that family heirloom — whether it's sold or preserved as a memorial to the sacrifices and suffering endured by previous generations — is at the heart of the play and film.
