When Hollywood looks back on the summer of 2024, mega-hits like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2” will be remembered more than any other title. But there were other, smaller box office success stories in recent months that deserve to be remembered.

Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” remains the highest-grossing animated film of all time, a significant post-COVID achievement. Likewise, another Disney film, Marvel’s “Deadpool,” has dethroned “Joker” as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever, a challenge the latter’s October sequel will look to take on.
Such projects, however, cost hundreds of millions of dollars in production and marketing, eating up budgets that could have been spent on smaller films that are trying to attract as many audiences as possible between major releases.
While Warner Bros.' "Furiosa" and "Horizon" lacked the R-rated success of studio mates Disney and Sony, neither was alone in such films. The low-budget horror film "Longlegs" was Neon's most-watched film to date, beating out "Furiosa," which cost more than $150 million to produce. "Longlegs" also outgrossed a record-breaking A24 film from April — "Civil War" — while costing far less, putting the serial killer thriller in a similar camp to Blumhouse's highly profitable model.
