The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in theaters in the United States in April 2023. The film was a huge hit for Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo, as it grossed approximately $1.362 billion worldwide from an estimated budget of $100 million.
Keegan-Michael Key voiced Toad in the film, which was written by Matthew Fogel and directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. The voice cast also included Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.
In March 2024, it was announced that a new Super Mario Bros. film would be released in 2026. Horvath and Jelenic are returning to direct the film, with Fogel once again penning the script.
