The history of games isn’t preserved nearly as well as movies and books, but thankfully that’s changing. Over the past decade, we’ve seen many great titles from the past get faithfully re-released, along with bonus content like interviews or concept art. The latest classic to get this treatment is Tomba!, as the aptly named Tomba! Special Edition pays a fitting tribute to the great PlayStation platformer.
The BEST PS1 Game Now on Switch! Did Limited Edition Games Ruin It? Tomba Special Edition Review!
Originally released in 1997, the platform-adventure game became a critical darling for Sony, who released the Whoopee Camp-developed title. While it wasn’t a sales smash, it (along with its sequel) did gain a cult following over time, which is why this release is so exciting. It was one of the best Metroidvania games for the console (alongside the excellent Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), and stood out with colorful graphics and a ton of RPG elements.
Whether you played the original or not, the experience of playing Tomba! Special Edition is instantly charming. The game’s strong art direction has helped it age relatively well, despite being an early 3D game. The evil anthropomorphic pigs you fight show a lot of personality, and while the combat isn’t its strongest point, it’s hilarious to see Tomba use his weapons and jump on the backs of pigs and bite them. It’s still a very charming game that will leave you with a smile.
There are some really nice features in the Tomba! Special Edition that make the game look and play better for a modern audience. Visually, the CRT filter is well done and gives the pixels a more accurate look despite running at a much higher resolution than originally intended. There are also various screen and border options (you can even do 4:3). But most importantly, you can save the game at any time and make use of a rewind function, which makes the portability much more bearable as you get used to it.
