Two Nigerian techies and their legal advisors find themselves in a labyrinth of state restrictions, brutality and corruption in director Afolabi Olalekan’s debut feature “Freedom Way.” The film heads to TIFF for its international premiere, screening as part of the festival’s Discovery program, which spotlights bold international cinema.

The film was chosen from profiles of 16 high-profile international world premieres that screened in Toronto this year.
“Choosing Afolabi to direct was an easy decision. I had known him for over four years and saw his dedication to filmmaking through his short films. I also knew that I would not be directing it myself, as I had just launched my production company, Bluhouse Studios. One of our core visions is to nurture and develop other creatives — writers, producers and directors,” writer-producer Blessing Uzzi told Variety.
“Working with Afolabi was the first step in fostering these peer-to-peer collaborations, and after 'Freedom Way' I have continued to collaborate with other directors and writers to produce short films and other projects under Bluhouse Studios.”
