Vance, first elected in 2022, rose to national prominence during Trump’s 2016 White House campaign, when his memoir Hillbilly Elegy became a national bestseller and he was asked to explain the Celebrity Apprentice host’s working-class appeal. He was also an Ivy League-educated lawyer and Silicon Valley venture capitalist.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: "After much deliberation and consideration, and taking into account the tremendous talents of many others, I have determined that the person best qualified to assume the office of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio. J.D. served our country honorably in the Marine Corps, graduated from The Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he was editor of The Yale Law Journal, and president of the Yale Law Veterans Association. J.D.'s book, 'Hillbilly Elegy,' became a bestseller and motion picture because it defended the hardworking men and women of our country.
Trump indicated that Vance would focus on winning the "blue wall" of the Midwest, the states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, which, except in 2016, have been Democratic electoral strongholds.
