The human rights watchdog urged the government to restore access to the US-based Instagram. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the Instagram account of "fascism" and ministers have criticized it for failing to remove posts deemed offensive by authorities.
“Blocking everyone’s access to an entire social media platform is an excessive measure that violates the rights to freedom of expression and information of millions of users,” said HRW’s Deborah Brown.
