'Twisters' Director Reveals Inspirations Behind Film | Vanity Fair
After revealing the reason behind the cancellation of the kissing scene in the disaster film starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung also revealed which film inspired the final tornado, dubbed "The Monster".
In the film, the massive EF-5 — dubbed "The Monster" — terrorizes the small town of El Reno and completely destroys the movie theater showing Frankenstein. But that was no accident, the director says. The film, a staple of Universal's monster movie collection, was a necessary choice for the standalone sequel to 1996's Twister starring Bill Paxton.
"I saw this movie as a monster movie in many ways. Universal has quite a history of monster movies, and Frankenstein is probably key to that," Chung told Variety. "When I thought about that, I also thought about the way the tornado is born and formed — even the refinery is meant to mirror what happens in 'Frankenstein.'"
