LONDON, Aug 8 (Reuters) – A large security presence, swift arrests and displays of unity by people across Britain have prevented a repeat of widespread rioting involving racist attacks on Muslims and migrants, officials said on Thursday, adding they remained on high alert.

After massive police deployments and thousands of anti-racism protesters took to the streets on Wednesday night, threats from far-right anti-immigration groups over large-scale gatherings failed to materialize.
However, the government said it was still exercising caution after days of unrest sparked by false online posts wrongly describing the suspected killer of three young girls in the July 29 knife attack in Southport, north-west England, as a Muslim migrant.
More than 400 people have been arrested across the country. Britain's top police officer, Mark Rowley, said on Thursday morning that more people had been arrested, including many with criminal records.
