What is NEXTGEN TV? KSAT Explains
The voluntary “NextGen” over-the-air TV system, also known as ATSC 3.0, was approved by the FCC for implementation in the US in late 2017, bringing with it the promise of features such as 4K, HDR, interactivity and mobility.
According to the Advanced Television Systems Committee, ATSC 3.0 is now available to 75% of Nielsen households in the U.S., but there are still many moving parts to align.
If you look back at the history of television, it takes time to go through technological transitions. The DTV (ATSC 1.0) transition in the US took over a decade. ATSC 1.0 was a mandatory transition; ATSC 3.0 is voluntary and happens when there is more competition.
