Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries revisits the creepy Mothman legend, focusing on theories surrounding the mystical winged creature. The series previously explored the Mothman legend in a 2002 segment. Now, it aims to connect recent sightings of a similar creature in the Chicago area to the original stories dating back 50 years. Volume 4, Episode 5, titled "The Mothman Revisited," features interviews with paranormal investigator Tobias Wayland and his work on the decades-old mystery.
The Mothman Mystery Explained
Volume 4 of Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries attempts to decipher the decades-old legend of the Mothman. Often linked to West Virginia folklore, sightings of the Mothman date back at least 50 years. Witnesses have also claimed to have seen the winged humanoid creature during the day and at night in Midwestern cities like Chicago, according to WTRF.
According to Netflix’s Tudum, witness accounts describe the Mothman as a flying black humanoid cryptid. People who have reportedly seen the creature claim it is about six to eight feet tall and has a body with wings that resemble those of a bat. These Mothman sightings have popped up all over the world, with people sometimes associating them with bad omens. There have also been reports from disaster-stricken areas such as Fukushima and Chernobyl.
Paranormal investigator Tobias Wayland explains the legend of the Mothman in the episode Unsolved Mysteries. Wayland and his colleague Lon Strickler further investigated the sightings of the entity, which they believe have increased in Chicago. During their investigation, Strickler entered 161 sightings on the map of the area. Most of these reports originated at Chicago's O'Hare airport.
