I try to see and support almost every film that comes out at my local theater. While this leads to seeing my fair share of failures, it mostly leads to some really nice surprises. This led me to see the faith-based musical drama Unsung Hero , directed by Richard Ramsey and Joel Smallbone. I am clearly not the target audience, as I am not a country music fan, nor am I particularly religious, and yet I was deeply moved by a film that speaks primarily to the goodness of human nature and what can happen when a community comes together instead of being divided.

Unsung Hero Blu Ray Unboxing

"Based on a remarkable true story, Unsung Hero follows Helen (Daisy Betts) and her husband David Smallbone (Joel Smallbone of For King & Country) as they move their family from Down Under to the United States with nothing more than their seven children, suitcases and their love of music. As Helen and David get their lives back on track, they begin to realize the musical prowess of their children, who would go on to become two of the most successful acts in inspiring music history: five-time Grammy Award-winning artists For King & Country and Rebecca St. James," the film's synopsis reads.

While the film’s appeal for many will likely lie in the portrayal of the childhoods of Rebecca St. James and the two For King & Country members, the focus of Unsung Hero is on their mother, Helen Smallbone. Helen (played wonderfully by Daisy Betts) is an incredible woman who has raised seven children and she really acts as the backbone of the family as her husband, David, pursues his dreams of running a music company in America. It’s a portrait of a selfless woman who only wanted the best for her children and we see her patience and kindness on display here.

Co-director Joel Smallbone plays his father in the film, and we see a very caring man whose careers put his family in difficult circumstances. Credit where it’s due, as Smallbone shows the positive and negative sides of his father, as his pride sometimes made him fearful and negative about the support the family received from the local church. The film focuses primarily on the struggles of the Smallbone family, with the final act showing the beginning of their daughter’s music career, and it ends with a truly beautiful musical performance. It’s a film with heart, and it really shows, as it’s a very charming film.
