Paris Olympics medal count: Team USA wins 5 gold medals on Saturday, China leads with 16 total
The United States won its 40th gold medal in the women's basketball final on Sunday, making it the tying country for the most gold medals at the Summer Olympics.
China also had 40 gold medals. China reached number 40 thanks to Li Wenwen, who won gold in the women's 81-kilogram weightlifting. The US kept within one of China when Jennifer Valente won gold in the women's omnium.
Japan finished with 20 gold medals. Host France had 16.
