Job growth picked up in September, with the U.S. economy adding 254,000 new jobs and the unemployment rate falling slightly to 4.1%.

The figures, which were well above expectations, provide further evidence of the Federal Reserve's strategy to cool inflation without a recession. The central bank began cutting interest rates last month.
The sectors with the strongest employment growth were the hotel and catering industry, healthcare, government, social assistance and construction.
Jobs in motion pictures and sound recording continued to decline, by 1,700 to 445,600. Jobs in broadcasting and content providers also fell, by 1,000 to 336,100. Jobs in publishing actually rose by 1,100 to 919,700.
