Bangladesh Riots | Sheikh Hasina Hints at US Role in Expulsion from Bangladesh | US News | N18G
The United States played no role in the ouster of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who recently resigned and fled the South Asian country, the White House said Monday, calling allegations of U.S. interference “simply untrue.”
“We were not involved at all. Any reports or rumors that the U.S. government was involved in these events are simply false,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during a press briefing when asked about reported allegations of US involvement.
A report in India's Economic Times newspaper on Sunday had quoted Hasina as accusing the US of playing a role in her ouster because it wanted control of Bangladesh's Saint Martin island in the Bay of Bengal. The newspaper said that Hasina had message had been conveyed to them through her closest associates.
