Venice mayor resigns after arrest in corruption probe
Luigi Brugnaro, who has maintained his innocence since the massive scandal involving public tenders and land sales came to light in July, addressed the city council at a special meeting on Friday as hundreds gathered outside the town hall to demand his resignation.
"I consider myself completely innocent and I will prove this in all appropriate places," Brugnaro said, according to a copy of his speech provided to AFP.
“I’m not resigning,” the 62-year-old mayor said. “I’m going all in. I’m going to fight to show my honesty and integrity.”
