US reaches settlement with alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
Alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has been in prison for nearly two decades, recently reached a plea agreement with the United States. As part of the deal, Mohammed, an al-Qaeda operative, and two of his alleged accomplices, Walid Bin 'Attash and Mustafa al Hawsawi, have agreed to plead guilty to all charges, which include the murders of the 2,976 people named in the indictment. A panel of military officers will sentence the accused at a later date, as the death penalty is off the table following the deal.
PBS' FRONTLINE episode “Secrets, Politics and Torture” examines the arrest of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. The episode also explores the alleged torture of Mohammed and his accomplices while in CIA custody.
CNN reported that accused 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is being held in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay prison. The U.S. has held Mohammed and his alleged accomplices — two of his top lieutenants — Walid Bin 'Attash and Mustafa al Hawsawi since 2003. The accused terrorists have been held in Guantanamo Bay and other facilities for decades, USA Today reported.
