Her Brutal Destruction, Betrayal, and Tragedy | Daisy Coleman | True Crime Documentary 2024
Daisy Coleman, the subject of the Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy, once said that her high school senior, Matthew Barnett, allegedly raped her. According to Coleman, she was 14 when Barnett, then 17, sexually assaulted her in January 2012. The incident allegedly occurred at a house party after they had been drinking heavily. Afterward, she claimed her attacker left her on her family’s lawn in the freezing cold. Coleman’s girlfriend Audrie Pott, 13, who had accompanied her that night, was also raped. Pott committed suicide just days after the alleged assault.
Daisy Coleman reportedly faced criticism and bullying when she spoke out about the attack. In addition, the district attorney initially dropped charges against Matthew Barnett and two other boys. Allegations surfaced that they dropped the case because Barnett was from a well-connected family. In 2014, Barnett pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of child abuse. He claimed that the sex between him and Coleman was consensual, refuting the latter's claims that she had fainted.
The case of Daisy Coleman and Matthew Barnett gained national attention before the Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy premiered. Daisy Coleman, who had attempted suicide multiple times during the case, took her own life in 2020. Her tragic death came four years after she was featured in the documentary.
