Now that summer is a month into its journey, the 2024 box office could really use a boost.

Only 20th Century's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" has surpassed $100 million domestically, which the sequels to "Dune," "Godzilla vs. Kong," "Kung Fu Panda" and "Ghostbusters" did in the spring.

Warner Bros.' “Furiosa,” a sequel to 2014's “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which had the biggest budget in May at $160 million, was anything but wild in box office sales despite positive reviews. The R-rated actioner barely cracked the $50 million mark by the end of its second weekend, beaten out by Sony's animated film “Garfield.”

Now that the recovery from the pandemic has been underway for years, this is a worrying outcome for theaters.
