Why You Can Ignore DisplayPort 2.0

DisplayPort 2.0 is incredible: it can drive monitors up to 16K resolution, three 4K monitors simultaneously, and connects via USB-C. But displays have been slowed by the pandemic, and until the technology catches up, you won’t be able to take advantage of the connection.

Why DisplayPort is Still Better Than HDMI

Monitors featuring the new DisplayPort 2.0 specification should already be in stores, but due to COVID-19, last year’s “plug tests,” in-person meetings where engineers from different companies discuss interoperability issues, have been canceled.

"VESA is now planning our next PlugTest in Taiwan this spring," a spokesperson for the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) told The Verge. "We expect this process to resume then."

The big change in DisplayPort 2.0 is the amount of data it can handle, with a theoretical maximum of 80 Gigabits per second (Gbps). Compare that to DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4, which are only 26 Gbps. In practical terms, this enables huge, high-resolution monitors that run at high frame rates.
