EXCLUSIVE: The birthplace of Britpop and countless bands, Camden has music cred in spades. Now the team behind the Camden Film Quarter want to create a neighbourhood that can keep up with the hustle and bustle of film and TV production.
That's why you should never mess with a royal guard…
Yoo Capital is the real estate investment firm behind the plans, which are now in the public domain. The firm’s co-founder and Managing Partner Lloyd Lee laid out the vision in an exclusive conversation with Deadline.
The core: studio facilities, jobs and a new neighborhood rooted in film and TV. “We came up with a story that if we create 50 percent affordable housing, jobs in film and TV, educational opportunities in film and TV, and public spaces, those are fundamental pillars that we can work on,” Lee says.
A visit to the site of the Camden Film Quarter reveals a mishmash of industrial outlets, a recycling centre and not much else. If the plans come to fruition, there will soon be a world-class film and TV-focused neighbourhood that will welcome the world’s best filmmakers, train a new generation of filmmakers and craftspeople and show the public some of the work along the way. As Lee sums it up: “We’re literally taking a slice of the most central part of London and creating a whole new film quarter.”
