President Xi Jinping said on Monday that China had made “progress” with the United States as he hosted Secretary of State Antony Blinken for talks in Beijing.
Xi says China, US 'made progress' during Blinken visit
Blinken's visit is the highest-profile trip to China by a U.S. official in nearly five years, as relations between the world's two largest economies are severely strained.
After his meeting with Xi, the top US diplomat said he agreed with Chinese leaders on the need to “stabilize” relations but was “clear” about the deep differences between the two countries.
“Direct engagement and ongoing communication at the senior level is the best way to manage differences responsibly and ensure that competition does not escalate into conflict,” Blinken told reporters.
