False or misleading claims about the US election posted by Elon Musk on X have been viewed nearly 1.2 billion times this year, a watchdog said Thursday, underscoring the billionaire’s potential influence on the deeply polarized race for the White House.
Elon Musk's misleading election messages have been viewed 1.2 billion times.
In the run-up to the November election, researchers have raised concerns that X, formerly Twitter, is a hotbed of political disinformation.
They have also indicated that Musk, who bought the platform in 2022 and is a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, appears to be influencing voters by spreading falsehoods on his personal account.
Researchers at the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) identified 50 posts since January from Musk — who has more than 193 million followers on the social media site — that made election claims that have been debunked by independent fact-checkers.
